Indira Gandhi was born on 19 November 1917 in Prayagraj. The first and, so far, only woman to serve as India's prime minister, Indira Gandhi was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru. She led the country from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her death. Her governments nationalized banks, promoted the Green Revolution in agriculture, and won the 1971 war with Pakistan that led to the creation of Bangladesh. In 1975 she declared a state of Emergency that suspended civil liberties and imprisoned opponents, which resulted in her defeat in the 1977 election. In 1984 she ordered troops into the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and later that year she was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards, which triggered deadly anti-Sikh riots.
