Turkish invasion of Cyprus

from 20 July 1974 to 18 August 1974

The Turkish invasion of Cyprus took place after a coup by the Cypriot National Guard, backed by the military junta in Athens, overthrew the president, Archbishop Makarios, with the aim of uniting the island with Greece. Turkey, citing its rights as a guarantor power under the 1960 treaty, landed troops on the north coast, and later carried out a second offensive in August, taking control of about a third of the island. Thousands were killed or went missing, and about 200,000 Greek Cypriots were displaced from the north, along with many Turkish Cypriots who moved to the north. The island has been divided since then by a UN-patrolled buffer zone, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, declared in 1983, is recognised only by Turkey.
