Establishment of Los Katíos National Park

6 August 1974

Los Katíos National Park lies in the Chocó region of northwestern Colombia, close to the border with Panama, in the wet lowlands of the Atrato River basin. It covers rainforest, swamps and floodplain wetlands that form part of the Darién region, one of the most biologically diverse corridors between Central and South America. The park shelters a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles and plants, including many species found nowhere else. It was designated by Colombia in the 1970s and later recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, in the 1990s, for its exceptional diversity. Illegal logging, settlement and conflict in the area have made its protection difficult over the years.
