Construction of Ostankino Tower

1960

The Ostankino Tower is a television and radio tower in Moscow, about five hundred and forty meters tall. It was built in the 1960s to a design by the engineer Nikolai Nikitin, and it was the tallest free-standing structure in the world until the CN Tower in Toronto took the title in 1976. The tower stands on prestressed concrete and has an observation deck and a revolving restaurant. It broadcasts television and radio to the Moscow region. A serious fire in 2000 damaged it badly and forced a long repair, but it has since reopened to visitors.
