Statue of Unity

31 October 2018

The Statue of Unity is a monumental statue of Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first deputy prime minister and home minister, standing on the Sadhu Bet island on the Narmada River in Gujarat. Patel played a central role in the integration of hundreds of princely states into the Indian Union after independence in 1947, which is why the monument is named for unity. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2018, on the eve of Patel's birth anniversary. At about 182 meters tall it is the tallest statue in the world, surpassing China's Spring Temple Buddha. The project drew criticism over its cost and the displacement of local tribal communities, but it has become a major tourist attraction.
