Construction of Istanbul Airport

29 October 2018

Istanbul Airport is the main international airport of Istanbul, built on the Black Sea coast on the European side of the city, far from the centre. It replaced the older Ataturk Airport as the principal gateway, with its opening in October 2018 timed to the anniversary of the Turkish Republic. The project was awarded to a private consortium and was designed to be among the largest airports in the world, with plans for several phases of expansion. Turkish Airlines moved its hub there in 2019, and the airport has since become a major transfer point between Europe, Asia and Africa. Its size and the environmental effects of building on forest and wetland drew criticism during construction.
