Rise of House of Stuart

1371

The House of Stuart began in 1371 when Robert II became king of Scotland, the first monarch of the family, whose name comes from the title of High Steward of Scotland held by his ancestors. The Stuarts ruled Scotland for over two centuries, until James VI inherited the English throne from Elizabeth I in 1603 and became James I of England, uniting the crowns in a personal union. The dynasty ruled England, Scotland and Ireland until 1714, with an interruption during the English Civil War and the Commonwealth, when Charles I was executed in 1649, and the Glorious Revolution of 1688 forced James II to flee. The last Stuart monarch was Queen Anne, who presided over the union of England and Scotland in 1707. Her successors came from the House of Hanover.
