Timurid Empire

from 1370 to 1507

The Timurid Empire was a Central Asian empire founded by Timur, known in the West as Tamerlane, a Turco-Mongol conqueror who rose to power in Transoxiana and ruled from Samarkand. His campaigns brought Persia, Iraq, parts of Anatolia, the Caucasus and northern India under his control, and he defeated the Ottoman sultan Bayezid at Ankara in 1402. After his death, the empire broke up, but his descendants continued to rule in Iran and Central Asia, with a capital at Herat in what is now Afghanistan. The Timurids were great patrons of art, architecture and science, and Ulugh Beg built a famous observatory at Samarkand. Their realm fell to the Uzbeks, but a prince of their line, Babur, founded the Mughal Empire in India.
