Construction of Château de Montsoreau

990 CE

The Chateau de Montsoreau stands on the bank of the Loire in western France, at the border of Anjou and Touraine. A fortress is recorded on the site around the turn of the first millennium, linked to Fulk Nerra, the powerful Count of Anjou, who built strongholds to defend his lands. The present castle was built in the middle of the fifteenth century by Jean de Chambes, an official under King Charles VII. It is unusual among Loire chateaux because it rises directly from the river. Alexandre Dumas used the legend of the castle in his novel La Dame de Monsoreau. Since 2016 it has housed a museum of contemporary art.
