Origins of Chernobyl

1193

Chernobyl is a town in northern Ukraine, in the Kyiv region, near the border with Belarus. It is first mentioned in a medieval chronicle of 1193 as a hunting estate of a prince of Kyiv, and it later passed under Lithuanian and Polish rule before becoming part of the Russian Empire. For centuries it had a large Jewish community, which was devastated in the twentieth century. In the 1970s the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was built near the town, and the nearby city of Pripyat was founded to house its workers. Its name became known worldwide after the nuclear accident of 1986, which led to the evacuation of the area. The town remains inside an exclusion zone, though some workers still live and work there.
