Rise of Timurid dynasty

1370

The Timurid dynasty was founded by Timur, known in the West as Tamerlane, a Turco-Mongol conqueror who took power in Transoxiana and built a vast empire from Samarkand, through campaigns in Persia, Mesopotamia, India and Anatolia. After his death the empire fragmented, but his descendants ruled over Persia and Central Asia for a century. Under rulers such as Shah Rukh and Ulugh Beg, an astronomer, the Timurid court became a center of art, architecture and science, with cities like Samarkand and Herat, in what is called the Timurid Renaissance. The dynasty was pushed out of Central Asia by the Uzbeks, but Timur's descendant Babur went on to found the Mughal Empire in India, which carried the Timurid line until 1857.
