House of Habsburg

from 11th century to 18th century

The House of Habsburg was one of the most powerful dynasties in European history. It takes its name from Habsburg Castle in what is now Switzerland, and it rose to prominence when Rudolf I was elected King of the Romans in 1273 and acquired Austria. Through marriages and inheritances, in the sixteenth century the family ruled Spain and its empire, the Low Countries and parts of Italy, and for centuries it supplied most of the Holy Roman Emperors. The Spanish line died out in 1700. The male line of the Austrian branch ended with Charles VI in 1740 and the dynasty continued through Maria Theresa as the House of Habsburg-Lorraine until the end of Austria-Hungary in 1918.
