The Republic of China was established after the Xinhai Revolution overthrew the Qing dynasty, with Sun Yat-sen as provisional president, and it ended thousands of years of imperial rule in China. Yuan Shikai soon became president and tried to restore the monarchy, and after his death in 1916 the country fragmented in the warlord era. The Nationalist Party, led by Chiang Kai-shek, nominally reunified China through the Northern Expedition in the late 1920s. The Japanese invasion of 1937 began the Second Sino-Japanese War, and civil war with the Communists resumed afterward. The Communists proclaimed the People's Republic of China in October 1949, and the Nationalist government withdrew to Taipei in Taiwan, where the Republic of China continues to exist.
