The Qajar dynasty ruled Iran after the Zand period, and it was founded by Agha Mohammad Khan, who unified the country and made Tehran the capital. Its rulers lost wars against Russia in the nineteenth century, which cost Iran territories in the Caucasus under treaties such as Gulistan and Turkmenchay. Faced with pressure from Britain and Russia, and with an empty treasury, the shahs granted concessions to foreign companies. Popular discontent led to the Constitutional Revolution of 1905 to 1911, which created a parliament. The last Qajar shah was deposed in 1925 by Reza Khan, who founded the Pahlavi dynasty.
