The Russian national football team traces its beginnings to the team the Russian Empire sent to the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, where it lost to Finland and then suffered a heavy defeat by Germany. After the revolution, the country's football was represented by the Soviet Union team, which won the first European Championship in 1960 and the Olympic title in 1988. After the Soviet collapse, Russia competed as a separate team from the early 1990s, and it reached the semi-finals of Euro 2008 under Guus Hiddink. It hosted the 2018 World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals. Following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian teams from international competition.
