Construction of Atatürk Airport

1912

Atatürk Airport lies at Yeşilköy on the European side of Istanbul and developed from an aviation field that dates back to the final years of the Ottoman Empire. Over the twentieth century it grew into a civilian international airport, handling a steadily increasing number of passengers as Istanbul expanded, and it was named after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. By the 2010s it was one of the busiest airports in Europe and a major hub for Turkish Airlines. Its capacity limits led to the construction of the much larger Istanbul Airport to the north, and in April 2019 all scheduled commercial flights moved there. The old site was later partly converted for other uses, including a public park and a hospital complex.
