Release of Titanic

1 November 1997

Titanic is an epic romance and disaster film written and directed by James Cameron, which retells the sinking of the ocean liner RMS Titanic in April 1912. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet play Jack and Rose, fictional lovers from different social classes whose story unfolds against the real events of the voyage. Cameron combined meticulous recreations of the ship with advanced computer effects and a large water tank built in Mexico. Released at the end of 1997, the film became the highest-grossing film in history at that time and won eleven Academy Awards in 1998, including Best Picture and Best Director. Its theme song, My Heart Will Go On, sung by Celine Dion, also became a worldwide hit.
