Discovery of Kepler-186 f

17 April 2014

Kepler-186 f is an exoplanet announced in April 2014, found by NASA's Kepler space telescope, and the first Earth-sized planet confirmed in the habitable zone of another star. It orbits the red dwarf Kepler-186, about five hundred light-years away in the constellation Cygnus, with a year of around 130 days. The planet is only slightly larger than Earth, which suggests that it could be rocky, but nothing is known about its atmosphere or whether it has water. Because its star is cooler and dimmer than the Sun, it receives less energy than Earth does. The discovery was a step in the search for planets that might support life.
