Release of Malay Wikipedia

26 October 2002

The Malay Wikipedia is the edition of Wikipedia written in the Malay language, known as Bahasa Melayu, which is an official language in Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore and closely related to Indonesian. It is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation and written entirely by volunteers, with a smaller number of articles than the separate Indonesian edition, which has attracted most speakers in the region. The project was started in the early years of Wikipedia, when new language editions were being created rapidly. Its articles cover subjects ranging from Malaysian and Southeast Asian history, culture and geography to science and technology, and it has grown through the efforts of editors and occasional campaigns to encourage contributions.
