Release of Korean Wikipedia

11 October 2002

The Korean edition of Wikipedia was launched in the autumn of 2002, and was written mainly by volunteer editors in South Korea. It grew steadily in the 2000s and 2010s, though more slowly than editions for some other large languages, partly because major Korean web portals provided their own user-generated encyclopedias, which competed for contributors. It now contains hundreds of thousands of articles. It uses the Korean alphabet Hangul, with Hanja shown for some words, and it covers many topics of Korean history, culture and popular culture, including K-pop.
