Release of Greek Wikipedia

1 December 2002

The Greek-language edition of Wikipedia was launched at the end of 2002, almost two years after the English edition. It is written by volunteers and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, covering topics in modern Greek and in the long history of Greek-speaking culture, from the ancient world and Byzantium to the present day. Greek is written in its own alphabet, and the edition is used by readers in Greece, Cyprus and the Greek diaspora. It has grown into a sizeable encyclopaedia, although it is smaller than the editions in the largest European languages.
