Release of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

29 October 2002

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and set in 1986 in the fictional Vice City, modeled on Miami. Its protagonist, Tommy Vercetti, voiced by the actor Ray Liotta, is a criminal released from prison who builds a crime empire. It was released first for the PlayStation 2 as a follow-up to Grand Theft Auto III. The game was praised for its 1980s atmosphere, humor and a soundtrack of licensed songs played on in-game radio stations, and it sold millions of copies. It was also criticized for its violence and for its portrayal of Cuban and Haitian gangs. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas followed in 2004.
