Discovery of Arche

31 October 2002

Arche is a small irregular moon of Jupiter, found in 2002 by a team of astronomers led by Scott Sheppard of the University of Hawaii during a survey for faint satellites of the giant planet. It orbits far from Jupiter on a retrograde path and belongs to the Carme group, a family of moons that probably came from the breakup of a captured asteroid. Its diameter is only a few kilometers. The moon is named after Arche, a figure from Greek mythology who is counted among the Muses in some traditions.
