The Lithuanian-language edition of Wikipedia was started in the early 2000s, when new language editions were being created in rapid succession. Lithuanian is a Baltic language, spoken by around three million people, and is one of the oldest living Indo-European languages, with many archaic features that interest linguists. The edition is written entirely by volunteers and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Its articles cover world subjects as well as Lithuanian history, geography, literature and culture, and local groups have organized events to encourage more people to write and edit. It is one of the larger Wikipedias in terms of article count relative to the number of speakers.
