Release of Galician Wikipedia

8 March 2003

The Galician Wikipedia is the edition of the free online encyclopedia written in Galician, the language of Galicia in northwestern Spain, which is closely related to Portuguese. The edition was among the early regional-language projects, started in the early 2000s, when Galician had been an official language of the region for only about two decades after being suppressed under the Franco dictatorship. It has an active community of volunteers and has been supported by cultural and educational institutions in Galicia, which have promoted editing in schools and universities. It has become an important symbol of the presence of Galician in digital media, with a broad range of topics.
