Discovery of Mneme

9 February 2003

Mneme is a small irregular moon of Jupiter, about two kilometres wide, in the Ananke group of retrograde moons. It orbits Jupiter far out in the opposite direction to the planet's rotation, and is believed to be a fragment of a larger captured body that broke up in a collision. It was discovered in a search for faint outer moons of Jupiter. Its name comes from Mneme, one of the three original Muses of Greek tradition, who was considered a daughter of Zeus and a personification of memory.
