The war in Darfur was an armed conflict in the western region of Sudan, which began when rebel groups, mainly the Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement, took up arms against the government in Khartoum, complaining of political and economic marginalisation. The government responded with air attacks and by backing Arab militias known as the Janjaweed, which attacked villages of non-Arab communities. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed, mostly from violence, hunger and disease, and millions were displaced. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Sudanese officials including President Omar al-Bashir on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. A peace agreement was signed in 2020, although violence continued.
