The Hindi-language edition of Wikipedia opened in the summer of 2003, a couple of years after the original English edition. Hindi is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and one of the official languages of India, written in the Devanagari script, but its Wikipedia has long been smaller than the number of speakers would suggest, because of limited internet access in earlier years and the lack of editors. Wikimedia India and other communities have organised editing events, and the growing use of mobile phones has broadened participation. The edition is written by volunteers and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, and it has grown steadily in size over the years.
