Release of Hungarian Wikipedia

8 July 2003

The Hungarian-language edition of Wikipedia, called Magyar Wikipédia, is one of the many language editions of the free online encyclopedia run by the Wikimedia Foundation. It began in 2003, in the first years after Wikipedia was created in 2001, when volunteers started writing and translating articles in Hungarian. Hungarian is a Uralic language spoken by around thirteen million people, mostly in Hungary but also in neighboring countries such as Romania, Slovakia and Serbia. Over the following years the edition grew to hundreds of thousands of articles, written and maintained by a community of volunteer editors who set their own policies within the wider Wikimedia framework.
