Release of Romanian Wikipedia

12 July 2003

The Romanian-language edition of Wikipedia is one of the many language editions of the free online encyclopedia run by the Wikimedia Foundation. It began in the summer of 2003, a couple of years after Wikipedia was launched. Romanian is a Romance language descended from Latin, spoken by roughly twenty-four million people as a first language, mostly in Romania and Moldova. The edition has grown to hundreds of thousands of articles written and maintained by volunteer editors, who set their own policies within the broader Wikimedia framework, and it covers general topics as well as a great deal of material on Romanian history, geography and culture.
