The Hebrew-language edition of Wikipedia is one of the many language editions of the free online encyclopedia run by the Wikimedia Foundation. It began in 2003, a couple of years after Wikipedia was created in 2001, when volunteers in Israel started writing articles in Hebrew. Hebrew is a Semitic language, written from right to left, and is the official language of Israel, spoken by around nine million people. The edition grew over the years to hundreds of thousands of articles, written and maintained by volunteer editors who set their own policies within the wider Wikimedia framework. It reflects the particular interests of its community, including Israeli history and Jewish culture.
