Wikibooks is a free online collection of textbooks and manuals that anyone can read and edit, hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. It began in 2003 as a sister project of Wikipedia, intended to hold instructional material that did not fit in an encyclopedia, such as textbooks, cookbooks and programming guides. The content is released under free licenses, so it can be copied and adapted, and it is available in many languages with the English edition being the largest. Contributors write complete books chapter by chapter, and the project has been used by students and teachers as a source of open educational material. It has remained a smaller project than Wikipedia, relying on a modest community of volunteers.
