Release of Mozilla Thunderbird

28 July 2003

Mozilla Thunderbird is a free email client and personal information manager developed by the Mozilla project. It came from the effort to separate the browser and the email program of the old Mozilla Application Suite, and it was designed to sit alongside the Firefox web browser. Thunderbird supports multiple email accounts, spam filtering, calendars and extensions, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It became widely used among people who preferred open-source alternatives to proprietary email software. Mozilla stopped active development of new features in the early 2010s, leaving maintenance to the community, but the project later regained momentum under a dedicated subsidiary, which has funded regular updates and mobile versions.
