Release of Turkish Wikipedia

5 December 2002

The Turkish-language edition of Wikipedia, known as Vikipedi, went online as one of the early non-English versions of the free encyclopedia project. It is written and maintained by volunteers, mostly in Turkey and among Turkish speakers abroad, and grew steadily over the following two decades to hold several hundred thousand articles. The edition has at times been affected by access restrictions imposed within Turkey, which drew attention to the role of Wikipedia as a source of information for Turkish readers. It remains one of the larger language editions by article count.
