Launch of LinkedIn

December 2002

LinkedIn is a social networking service aimed at professionals, built around online profiles that work like a digital CV and a network of work contacts. It was founded by Reid Hoffman, a former executive at PayPal, together with several co-founders from the Silicon Valley technology community. The site officially launched in 2003, and growth was slow at first, but it became a standard tool for recruiting, job hunting and professional networking. It went public in 2011 and was bought by Microsoft in 2016. Its features have expanded to include a news feed, articles, online learning courses and job advertisements, and it has members in virtually every country.
