Publication of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

1 December 2001

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a short book written by J. K. Rowling, presented as a textbook used by students at Hogwarts school in the Harry Potter novels. It is credited to the wizard Newt Scamander, with a foreword by Albus Dumbledore, and it describes magical creatures such as dragons, hippogriffs and the Niffler, in the manner of an encyclopedia. It was published for charity, and all the proceeds went to Comic Relief, along with those of a companion book, Quidditch Through the Ages. Years later the book inspired a series of films, starting with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in which Newt Scamander is the main character, played by Eddie Redmayne.
