Construction of Dolby Theatre

9 November 2001

The Dolby Theatre is a live-entertainment theatre in the Hollywood and Highland complex on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. It opened as the Kodak Theatre and was designed with the Academy Awards in mind, becoming the permanent home of the Oscars ceremony from the following year. Its auditorium has a horseshoe shape with multiple balconies, built to give the large audience a clear view of the stage. The name changed to Dolby Theatre in the early 2010s after the bankruptcy of Eastman Kodak and a sponsorship deal with Dolby Laboratories. Besides the Oscars, it has hosted concerts, award shows and the finals of television contests such as American Idol.
