Release of Afrikaans Wikipedia

16 November 2001

The Afrikaans Wikipedia is the edition of the free online encyclopedia in Afrikaans, a language that developed from seventeenth-century Dutch in southern Africa and is spoken mainly in South Africa and Namibia. It was one of the first non-English editions of Wikipedia, begun in the first year of the whole project, and has been written by volunteers ever since. It covers topics ranging from South African geography and history to science and popular culture, and it provides a way for speakers to find information in their own language. Afrikaans has several million native speakers and many more second-language speakers.
