Release of Basque Wikipedia

6 December 2001

The Basque-language edition of Wikipedia is one of the many language editions of the free online encyclopedia run by the Wikimedia Foundation. It began in December 2001, only a few months after the project was created, which makes it one of the oldest non-English editions. Basque, or Euskara, is a language isolate with no known relatives, spoken by several hundred thousand people in the Basque Country, which straddles Spain and France. The edition grew over the years to hundreds of thousands of articles, written by volunteer editors, and it has played a role in promoting the use of the language in digital media.
