Creation of D

8 December 2001

D is a systems programming language created by Walter Bright and first released at the end of 2001. It was intended to improve on C++ by keeping its power while simplifying it, with features such as garbage collection, modules, built-in unit testing, powerful templates and the ability to run functions at compile time, while also offering options for memory safety. It was originally called Mars. Andrei Alexandrescu joined the design of a major redesign, D2, in 2007. D compiles to native code and is open source. It has been used in some games, in a file system product and in other software, but it has never reached the adoption of competitors such as Go and Rust.
