Premiere of Xena: Warrior Princess

from 4 September 1995 to 18 June 2001

Xena: Warrior Princess was an action and fantasy series set in a mythical ancient world, a spin-off of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. It was created by John Schulian and Robert Tapert and was produced in New Zealand, where much of it was filmed near Auckland. Lucy Lawless played Xena, a former warlord who is trying to make amends for her past, and Renee O'Connor played her companion, the bard Gabrielle. The show mixed adventure, humour and borrowed elements from Greek and other mythologies. It ran for six seasons in syndication until 2001. It gained a large following, and many viewers saw the central relationship of the two women as a groundbreaking portrayal in popular television.
