Operation Storm

from 4 August 1995 to 7 August 1995

Operation Storm was a large military offensive by the Croatian army that retook most of the territory of the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina, which had been held by rebel Serbs since the early 1990s. The attack, launched from several directions, quickly overcame the Krajina Serb forces and took the capital, Knin, in a couple of days. The offensive ended major fighting in the Croatian War of Independence and paved the way for the peace talks that ended the war in Bosnia. A large part of the Serb population, estimated at well over a hundred thousand people, fled the area, and there were reports of killings and destruction of property. Croatia celebrates it as a victory, while Serbia and Serbs mark it as a tragedy.
