Release of Internet Explorer

16 August 1995

Internet Explorer was a web browser made by Microsoft, first released in August 1995 as part of an add-on package for Windows 95. It was based on code licensed from Spyglass, and it entered the so-called browser wars against Netscape Navigator. By bundling it with Windows, Microsoft helped it overtake Netscape, and by the early 2000s it was used by the great majority of internet users. This led to antitrust cases in the United States and Europe. It later lost ground to Firefox and Google Chrome, was replaced by Microsoft Edge, and was retired in June 2022.
