Creation of BeOS

October 1995

BeOS was an operating system developed by Be Inc., a company founded by the former Apple executive Jean-Louis Gassée and designed for multimedia, multiprocessor computers. It made extensive use of multithreading, had a fast 64-bit journaling file system called BFS, and first ran on the company's own PowerPC machines, the BeBox, and later on Macintosh and Intel PCs. Apple considered buying Be in 1996 as the basis for its next operating system but chose NeXT instead. Be Inc. struggled to attract applications and users, released a free version in 2000 and was sold to Palm in 2001. The open-source project Haiku was begun to recreate the system and is still under development.
