Introduction of Georgian lari

25 September 1995

The Georgian lari became the currency of Georgia in the mid-1990s, replacing the temporary coupon currency that had been used since the collapse of the Soviet Union. That coupon had lost value rapidly during the years of civil conflict and hyperinflation that followed independence. The introduction of the lari was part of a broader stabilisation programme, and one lari is divided into a hundred tetri. The currency was initially managed within a narrow range but later allowed to float, and it has since fluctuated with changes in the regional economy.
