Origins of Uruguayan Primera División

1900

The Uruguayan Primera Division is the top level of football in Uruguay and one of the oldest national championships outside the British Isles. It was organized by the Uruguay Association Football League, which was created by clubs, many of them founded by British railway workers and immigrants. The first champion was Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, which is regarded as the predecessor of Penarol. Since then, Penarol and Nacional have dominated the league, winning the great majority of titles. The league was an important basis for the national team's early achievements, including Olympic gold medals in 1924 and 1928 and the first World Cup in 1930. It became professional in the 1930s.
