Tosca is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, with a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa after a play by Victorien Sardou. It was first performed at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in January 1900. The story is set in Rome in 1800 during the Napoleonic wars and follows the singer Floria Tosca, her lover the painter Mario Cavaradossi and the sinister police chief Scarpia. It is a work of intense drama, with famous arias such as Vissi d'arte and E lucevan le stelle. Critics at first had mixed reactions, but it soon became one of the most performed operas in the repertoire.
