Founding of RCD Espanyol de Barcelona

1900

RCD Espanyol de Barcelona was founded as the Sociedad Española de Football by a student, Ángel Rodríguez Ruiz, who wanted a club made up entirely of Spanish players, in contrast to the foreign-led clubs that then dominated football in Barcelona. It received royal patronage in the early twentieth century, which gave it the Real prefix and the crown on its badge. The team has won the Copa del Rey several times and reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1988 and 2007, losing both. Its supporters are known as periquitos, and the club plays in blue and white. After many years at the Sarrià stadium, it moved to a new ground in Cornellà de Llobregat in 2009, and its rivalry with FC Barcelona is the city derby.
