Maidan Nezalezhnosti, or Independence Square, is the central square of Kyiv, lying on the city's main street, Khreshchatyk. In the nineteenth century the area took shape as a commercial and civic space, and it was largely rebuilt after the Second World War destruction. Under Soviet rule it bore several names, such as Kalinin Square and October Revolution Square, before being renamed in 1991 after Ukraine declared independence. It has been a gathering place of national events, notably the Orange Revolution of 2004 and the Revolution of Dignity, known as Euromaidan, in 2013 and 2014. The Independence Monument, a tall column topped by a female figure, was unveiled in 2001.
