Founding of FIFA

21 May 1904

FIFA, the Federation Internationale de Football Association, was founded in Paris by representatives of seven European national associations: France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Its aim was to bring order to international football by creating common rules and organising matches between countries. Germany announced its intention to join by telegram. The organisation moved to Zurich in 1932 and grew into a global body with more than two hundred member associations. It created the World Cup, first held in Uruguay in 1930 under president Jules Rimet, and it is now responsible for the tournament and for regulating the game worldwide. In 2015 it was shaken by a major corruption scandal that led to arrests and reforms.
